Colors to Use for Vegetables

Use greens for leafy veggies like lettuce and spinach. Reds, oranges and yellows work for tomatoes, carrots and corn. Purples are great for eggplants and beets.

Vegetable Coloring Tips

A. Layering Colors: For something like a red pepper, start with an orange base. Layer reds on top, going darker towards the top. Add yellow highlights.

B. Textured Effects: Use the side of a pencil or crayon edge to create a bumpy, ridged texture on corn kernels or peas in the pod.

Invite Creativity Challenge: Farmers Market Scene

Use a colorful array of natural hues found at your local farmers market – vibrant reds, oranges, greens, purples.

This challenge helps practice illustrating a variety of organic shapes, colors and textures. It encourages thoughtful color combinations reminiscent of fresh produce.
